For those who've watched me for awhile, I once started a story about a pony who owned an airship from an earlier time, and struggled to take it on a epic journey.
The Denver is a navy ship from an earlier era, which the navy has been ready to retire for several years. And I'm about to take her on an epic journey, wether she wants to go or not.
I love my full bodied girl, but she can sure be stubborn at times. Some of her mechanical difficulties have been... Amazing is the only way I can explain it.
I wonder if its natural for a XO to talk about his ship like a significant other.
Hope my wife doesn't read this, she might think I'm cheating on her with 17,000 tons of artfully arranged steel.

I've been in the job for just over a week. It's awesome.
Where to begin... We sailed into Tokyo harbor with a crew that had been sitting pier side for seven months, had some difficulties with some fishing boats, but came out unscathed.
We sat at anchor for a few days in Sasebo on loading cargo, and right before we were to go pier side, we had a problem that made us go cold and dark. Got that fixed, but out trip pier side was made with far less equipment running than we are used to.
The Captain has been letting me drive for the really hard stuff, and I haven't let him down yet
I am different from the guy in the job before me, and there has been some growing pains with the crew. I walk around a lot, and I have a ESP for knowing where to be to see things going wrong. However, the crew is full of great sailors and officers. They just need to be shown the direction to go, and the head that direction full of energy
I've some how managed to fill 20 hours of the day with work and still not do everything that needs to be done. So much for art... Darn you YN1 N for so efficiently filling my inbox with things I need to be doing.
I have the second best job in the Navy, and that's only because my Commanding Officer has the best one.
I'm the XO of Denver. She's the oldest 'gator in the swamp, and demands a lot of TLC. But she's the best ship in the Navy, and I am eternally blessed to be her 2nd in Command
So long for about a month. I will try to check in from every port I hit.

Well, I'm off. Next stop Japan and my ship, then Underway for adventures in the South West Pacific.
For those who are curious, I am going to be XO of the oldest active Amphibious ship in the US Navy. It's stationed in Japan, and the ship has a Vietnam combat Ribbon.
Any guesses on the ship?
I will be mostly incommunicado for the next several months, since DA is not on the list of sites I can browse from the ship. I may be able to get on during port visits, but dont be upset if it takes me a while to reply to messages.
I have a project I am working on. Hopefully I can finish it on the deployment.

I'm looking to explore creating animations. Does anyone have any suggestions for software (or set of software) that is relatively easy to use, and not too expensive (a few hundred dollars or so. Given my position, I cannot use pirated software). I'm looking to create puppets and use them for both animations and artwork.
I'm looking for a project to work on during my job as XO to help me decompress from the day. animation seems like something interesting enough to fit the bill.
I'm back in Sasebo in 1 week, and take over as XO of my ship in about 3 weeks. oh, I deploy in 2 weeks.

So, I learned today that the Navy has decided I am worthy of promotion to the Rank of Commander (O-5, same rank as a LT Colonel in the army).
Wow...
I guess that probably makes me the senior Brony in the military (If I wasn't already...)
Anyway, sorry for the lack of updates. Lets say the military demands a great sacrifice in time for the officers they send to leadership positions. I've had a bunch of ideas, but just haven't had the time to put into them.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing Equestria Girls. I have the perfect cover, my 6 year old daughter who has shown a real interest in the movie. DHX has done such a wonderful job making MLP appeal to a wide range of ages that I think the movie will be just fine.
